Firearms and Toolmarks Trainee Program

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking four qualified applicants for the position of Forensic Scientist Trainee. The two year training program prepares individuals with the tools to compare and evaluate a wide variety of items such as various firearms, unfired ammunition, fired components, clothing, tools and objects bearing toolmarks. Trainees will be taught to interpret results and report findings for use by the criminal justice system culminating in court testimony as an expert witness.
General Forensic Science Trainee Program Requirements:
- Education and training hours will be primarily during regular business hours.
- A background check, fingerprinting and collection of buccal swab (DNA sample) will be conducted
- Candidates selected for admission to the Forensic Science Trainee Program will receive $37,668 per annum with full state benefits.
- The training location is subject to placement at one of the four Commonwealth of Virginia laboratories located in Fairfax, Norfolk, Roanoke, and Richmond.
- Trainees will be required to sign a two year employment agreement with the Virginia Department of Forensic Science upon successful completion of the trainee program.
- Employment upon successful completion of the training will be at one of the four agency laboratories based on agency needs.
- A valid driver’s license and/or other means of reliable transportation.
- Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications For Successful Firearms and Toolmarks Trainee Applicants:
- BA/BS degree in physical, natural or forensic science.
- Knowledge of forensic principles, practices, procedures and techniques used to prepare, examine, analyze firearms and toolmarks evidence; experience in evidence handling, preservation and identification; preparing and presenting narrative reports; and laboratory equipment.
- Experience with NIBIN (National Integrated Ballistics Information Network); experience with computers in a laboratory environment.
- Ability to analyze data, develop sound conclusions, maintain accurate records, and analyze and solve technical problems. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Mechanical aptitude to assemble, disassemble and/or operate a variety of tools and equipment including firearms and laboratory equipment.
