Forensic Biology Trainee Program
The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking eight qualified applicants for the position of Forensic Scientist Trainee. The one year training program prepares individuals with the tools to perform forensic examinations, including identification of blood and other body fluids, specie origin determination, and DNA PCR-based STR fluorescence imaging analysis on genetic material from criminal evidence related to rapes, homicides, and other criminal cases using state-of-the-art analytical methodologies, techniques and instrumentation. Trainees will be taught to interpret results and report findings for use by the criminal justice system culminating in court testimony as an expert witness. Training meets the FBI’s DNA training standards and will be conducted by forensic scientists qualified in the areas specified.
General Forensic Science Trainee Program Requirements:
- BA/BS degree in biology, chemistry, forensic science, or related scientific field.
- Education and training hours will be primarily during regular business hours.
- A background check, fingerprinting and collection of buccal swab (DNA sample) will be conducted.
- The training location is subject to placement at one of the four Commonwealth of Virginia laboratories located in Fairfax, Norfolk, Roanoke, and Richmond.
- Candidates selected for admission to the Forensic Science Trainee Program will receive $37,668 per annum with full state benefits
- Trainees will be required to sign a two year employment agreement with the Virginia Department of Forensic Science upon successful completion of the trainee program.
- Employment upon successful completion of training will be at one of the four agency laboratories based on agency needs.
- A valid driver’s license and/or other means of reliable transportation.
- Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications For Successful Forensic Biology Trainee Applicants:
- Experience working in a scientific laboratory and knowledge of common laboratory techniques, instruments, and laboratory safety.
- Hands-on experience with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique.
- Completed six (6) credit hours in genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology (molecular genetics, recombinant DNA technology).
- The ability to maintain accurate records, analyze and interpret data, manage multiple tasks efficiently, establish work priorities, develop sound conclusions from analyses, and possess good oral and written communication skills.
